Perth Airport seeks to achieve an authentic, engaging and co-designed cultural activation for passengers arriving at Terminal 1 International that celebrates WA’s Aboriginal culture and heritage, educating visitors on their arrival to Whadjuk Noongar Boodja and acknowledging its traditional custodians, the Whadjuk Noongar people.
Perth Airport Pty Ltd (PAPL) is seeking a Whadjuk Noongar artist with a connection to the lands in and around the Airport precinct and an understanding of the cultural heritage of the area to create an art installation (both static and digital) at Terminal 1.
Our goals for the project are to deliver a multi-faceted, interactive, and experiential installation that:
Celebrates the rich culture and heritage of the local Whadjuk Noongar people.
Is co-designed with Whadjuk Noongar representatives who have the cultural authority to speak on behalf of the area.
Engages visitors with a distinctive and meaningful experience of Whadjuk Noongar culture.
Raises awareness for Perth locals of the cultural heritage of Whadjuk Noongar Boodja.
Acknowledges and pays respect to Traditional Custodians in a culturally appropriate, respectful, and authentic way.
Clearly articulates that Perth Airport is situated on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja.
Emphasises the role Perth Airport plays in connecting domestic and international passengers to other Aboriginal communities in Western Australia.
Where possible, identification of economic development opportunities for local Whadjuk people.
Consultation with Whadjuk Noongar Traditional Owners and Knowledge Holders is critical to understanding and imparting the significance and culturally rich stories associated with the land of the Whadjuk People and will be a major contributing factor to the success of the Project. The installation will be an aspirational, immersive, and engaging cultural activation – the result of collaboration between Whadjuk Noongar Traditional Owners and Knowledge Holders who will be responsible for developing the cultural theme or story that will lead the narrative of the installation.
